The story goes that Anaïs said to her friend after she saw Wilfrid for the first time: "This is the man I will marry one day." 
Apparently she knew what she wanted - and got it!


Wilfrid Jérôme Antoine Martin

Wilfrid was a cook for the military training camp in Saillon, Valais. Most of the time he was only home during the weekends. Anaïs was used to bring up her 11 children alone. Her oldest daughter Edwige - who was almost 20 when her youngest sisters were born - helped her mother a lot.

Anaïs was a midwife who performed her profession until very late in life. The last child she helped into this world was Jean-Claude Martin, son of her daughter-in-law Madeleine and of her son Rodolphe. Anaïs was 73 years old and Madeleine 48 years old! Anaïs was amazing: whenever a child was born from a single mother, she kept the baby in her own household (one more did not matter in such a large family) until a solution was found for the baby to stay permanently.

One little girl stayed permanently in her family: Fernande Borgeaud. Fernande's celibate mother went to France to make a living and left her baby with Anaïs. That made Fernande Anaïs' 12th child. At age 22 Fernande left for Brazil with her "sister" Yvonne to help her with the 5 children and never returned to Switzerland.
